Les Personnages

KÉPHALOS

Grand, imposant, voix baryton, le Roi Képhalos parle toujours à haute vox pour intimider les autres. Lorsqu’il était jeune, il rêvait de voyager sur un grand voilier à traers le monde, mais il n’a jamais vécu son rêve. Il était “le bon fils” qui a toujours fait ce que ses parents lui ont dit de faire, et donc il n’a jamais suivi son coeur. Du coup, il suit la loi et les devoirs du Roi à la lettre sans se poser de questions. Marié d’amour avec Iris, il l’a laissée suite aux instructions de son père. Il s’est remarié avec Rhéa, mais il ne l’a jamais aimée. Képhalos ne sait pas aimer, parce qu’il ne s’aime pas.

RHÉA

Autrefois une belle femme, voix alto, Rhéa a hérité son port de souveraine d’une excellent éducation. Effondrée par le manque d’amour de son mari Képhalos, elle se noie dans l’alcool. Elle ne croit plus en rien. Elle ne s’en cache pas et proclame ce qu’elle pense sous l’influence de la boison.

PYGMALION

Il cache le fait qu’il est un prince héritier. Ténor, Pygmalion est persuadé qu’il a été abandonné par sa mère et donc ne croit plus en l’amour. Elevé pour un jour devenir Roi, il ne s’intéresse pas aux devoirs royaux et, au contraire de son père, a passé une grande partie de sa vie à poursuivre son rêve, celui d’être sculpteur.

GANYMÈDE

Baryton, Ganymède était le meilleur ami de jeunese. Il a un rang important dans la société en dirigeant les chantiers de la carrière de marbre. Bien que toujours un peu jaloux de Pygmalion. Il est marié avec Aurore.

AURORE

Ancienne petite amie de Pygmalion, Aurore, mezzo soprano, est considérée comme un membre proche de la famille royale. Son amour s’est transformé en un amour fraternel envers Pygmalion, mais son mari, Ganymède, dont elle est vraiment amoureuse, n’en est pas convaincu.

CASSANDRA

Cassandra se croit plus puissante qu’elle n’est. Jolie journaliste, elle fait tout ce qu’elle peut pour atteindre ses buts. Elle a une voix de soprano dramatique dont elle utilise toutes les gammes pour se mettre en avant. Très ambitieuse, elle est devenue l’amante du Roi pour mieux savoir ce qui se passe dans le palais.

SUÔDÉS

Ministre, ténor, cet homme corpulent n’est bon qu’à dire oui au Roi. Il pense qu’il est important et puissant, mais les citoyens s’en moquent complètement, sachant parfaitement qu’il n’est qu’un grand prétentieux. Prèt à tout pour garder son poste.

RATA

Grand, dégingandé...mais bègue, voix nasale, baryton martin, Rata n’a rien d’un Ministre mais, grâce au népotisme, il a une place dans le gouvernement du Roi. Heureusement pour lui, Suôdés est toujours là pour remédier à ses bévues.

IRIS

Hagarde. Voix cassée. Elle était la première femme de Képhalos et de ce fait la mère de Pygmalion, mais a été bannie après la naissance de celui-ci parce qu’elle encourageait Képhalos à vivre son rêve. Fatiguée et malade, elle est mourante, mais garde l’espoir de revoir son fils un jour. En attendant, elle vend des montres pour vivre. Maternelle dans sa splendeur, prête à tout donner pour que les gens qu’elle aime soient heureux.

DAMON

Grand, baryton. Musicien, Damon joue de la guitare et s’intéresse aux autres instruments de musique. Il est aussi compositeur et voudrait enseigner la musique et les arts, qu’il croit être aussi importants que les arts martiaux. Il travaille dans la carrière de marbre pour gagner sa vie, mais il garde toujours un peu d’énergie, le soir, pour nourrir ses rêves de musique.

EUGÉNIE

Petite, rondelette, la titi Parisienne est la bonne à tout faire et sait qu’elle n’aura jamais la chance d’avancer dans la vie. Mezzo soprano, elle n’a pas reçu une éducation solide, mais c’est une femme de terre, simple, qui a un très bon sens pratique des choses, et n’hésite pas à ouvrir sa grande gueule pour dire ce qu’elle pense.

PHIDIAS

De taille moyenne, Phidias est sculpteur et attend anxieusement son heure de gloire, sachant que celle-ci vient aux gens qui ont des moyens ou des connaissances qu’il n’a pas. Ténor, il travaille aussi dans la carrière de marbre, et rêve de sculpter quelque chose qui traversera le temps.

GALATHÉE

Galathée, soprano, d’une beauté intemporelle, est l’incarnation de tout l’amour dans lequel Pygmalion n’a jamais cru. Inconsciente de sa beauté, elle a un caractère plus profond qu’il n’y paraît.

The Characters

KÉPHALOS

An imposing man, baritone, the King Képhalos always speaks loudly to intimidate everyone. When he was young, he dreamed of sailing the seas of the world, but never lived his dream. He was the obedient son who always did what his parents told him to do. And so, he follows the law and his duties of King to the letter without asking questions. Married to Iris when he was young, he left her following his father’s instructions, and married Rhéa, whom he never loved. He doesn’t know how to love.

RHÉA

At one time a beauty, alto, Rhéa inherited her queen stature from an excellent education. Destroyed by the lack of love from her husband, however, she has drowned her life and pain in alcohol. She no longer believes in anything. She doesn’t hide her feelings and blurts out whatever she wants to say while under the influence.

PYGMALION

He hides the fact that he is a royal prince to the entire world. This tenor is persuaded that his mother abandoned him as a baby, he never believed in love. Raised to one day become king, he is totally uninterested in royal duty, and to the anguish of his father, spent most of his life following his dream throughout the world, as a sculptor incognito.

GANYMÈDE

Baritone, Ganymède was Pygmalion’s best friend as a youngster. He holds an important place in society overseeing business in the marble quarry. He always had a jealousy problem with Pygmalion. He is married to Aurore.

AURORE

Pygmalion’s childhood girlfriend, mezzo soprano, Aurore is considered as a close member of the royal family. Her love for Pygmalion remains fraternal, as she is carrying the child of the man she really loves, Ganymède.

CASSANDRA

Cassandra thinks she is more powerful than she really is. Attractive journalist, she would do anything to reach her goals. Dramatic Soprano, she uses her vocal prowess to stand out in front. Extremely ambitious, she became the secret lover to the king to find out what goes on in the palace.

SUÔDÉS

Minister, tenor, this short, very fat man is a total “yes man” to the king. He thinks he holds an important role in history, but the citizens ridicule him completely, knowing perfectly that he is a harmless, impotent little man. He does everything to keep his position.

RATA

Too tall for his britches, this stuttering tenor doesn’t have the stuff ministers are made of, but as Suôdés’s son, has a place in the government of the king. Fortunately for him, Suôdés is always there to clean up his messes.

IRIS

Weary worn, this broken-voiced woman was once the wife of the king and is the mother of Pygmalion, but she was bannished from the kingdom because she encouraged Képhalos to live his dreams to sail the seas. Tired and sick, she is dying, yet has always hoped to oneday reunite with her son. In the meantime, she sells watches to make a living. The epitome of motherhood, she sacrifices everything so others will be happy.

DAMON

Tall, baritone. Musician, Damon plays guitar and many other musical instruments. Composer, he would like to teach music and art, which he believes are as important, if not more, than Martial arts. He works in the marble quarry to earn his living, but always has the energy to nourish his musical dreams at night.

EUGÈNIE

Short, round, this “titi” Parisian is the maid and knows she’ll never aspire to anything else. Mezzo soprano, she didn’t receive a good education, but she is nobody’s fool, with a strong practical sense of things. She never hesitates to open her mouth to say what she thinks.

PHIDIAS

Of medium height, Phidias is a talented sculptor anxiously awaiting his hour of glory, yet he knows he does not hold the right cards to make something of his talent. Tenor, he works in the quarry as well, dreaming of sculpting something that will last through time.

GALATHÉE

Galathée, a soprano of intemporal beauty, is the incarnation of the love Pygmalion never believed could exist. Unpretentious and caring, her soul runs deep.
